Sometimes I carry his paperbacks in my coat pocketand use his poems as guides.In the wind this morning over the apple orchard a hawkhung like a kite.I stared hard, trying to burn the scene into my memorylike a line from one of Stafford's poems, feeling something more importantwas happening than a hawk circling over apples, but I couldn't say.
